Theory of Meaning

Notions of Logotherapy

Selftranscendence

Man transcends himself either toward another human being or toward meaning. Love, I would say, is that capacity which enables him to grasp the other human being in his very uniqueness. Conscience is that capacity which empowers him to seize the meaning of a situation in its very uniqueness, and in the final analysis meaning is something unique.

Humanity

The point is that you learn to see the humanity in the human being and that you don’t forget to see it. Until the last moment, right down to his last breath, and even in an insane person, and even in a person who is a hardened criminal, humanity remains.

Love

One cannot love anybody without turning away from oneself. However, the crucial question is whether this movement is prompted by the desire to turn toward a positive value, or whether the intention is a radical escape from oneself.

A Message of Hope

Each of you is unique, unrepeatable, irreplaceable, incomparable, separate, and distinct. You have been given a body and a pyche which are sometimes similar in character type and/or traits to others, but beyond that your are a spirit person with a limited degree of freedom and a capacity to respond to life an its demands. There never was, there never is, there never will be an absolute twin, a clone, one who can replace you. You are a one of a kind and life is calling, inviting, and challenging you to become the authentic you by trancending yourself and at the same time forgetting yourself.

If you simply search for pleasure or power, you will experience something missing. You will at some moment feel empty, a void, a vacuum. You will wonder, “What's it all about?”

When the need for meaning finally occurs to you, you will beging to seach for meaning every day.

A challenge to everyone

If we would see each other as unique persons, each capable of unique contributions, we could come to a common vision and a common meaning. We would be able to transcend our differences, even transcend ourselves and our surrounding for the good of a greater community by experiencing relationships of respect, caring, and at times love. Dr. Frankl would challenge you to join the human minority, not to be or remain lost in the crowd but to become one of those who lives, thinks, speaks and acts according to one’s conscience

Conscience / Gewissen

As long as a man is still motivated either by the fear of punishment or by the hope of reward – or, for that matter, by the wish to appease the superego – conscience has not had its say as yet.

Viktor E. Frankl, The Unheard Cry for Meaning, p. 56

Solange Angst vor Strafe, oder Hoffnung auf Belohnung, oder der Wunsch dem Über-Ich zu gefallen, da ist, solange ist das Gewissen noch gar nicht zu Wort gekommen.
